HABITAT 1150* - Coastal lagoons

Lagoons are expanses of shallow coastal water with variable water salinity and volume, with or without aquatic vegetation. This habitat is mainly regulated by inflow from rivers and tidal waters. In Italy, it represents the largest habitat characterizing the transitional aquatic environments and extends mainly in the lagoons of the Northern Adriatic Sea. This habitat is relevant for the presence of various species of flora and fauna, also of conservation interest. The presence of aquatic phanerogams (Cymodocea nodosa, Zostera marina, Z. noltei, Ruppia cirrhosa and R. maritima) contributes to the good state of conservation of the habitat.
